A non Christmas Christmas Ballad; set at Christmas but not about the Christmas story. This song was inspired by a memory I have of my mom and I watching the snow out my bedroom window when I was a little girl. Naming the sparkles diamonds spoke to me about finding something lasting and valuable out of any experience, beautiful or cold or temporary.

Lyrics

Diamonds In The Snow

On Christmas Eve when I was five and supposed to be in bed
I stood and watched the snowfall by the street lamp light instead
You appeared beside me and Isaid “Mom, why do they shine?”
You looked on me and smoothed my hair and shared these words so wise
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those are diamonds in the snow; When you find them it doesn’t seem as cold
The snow will surely melt away; Keep the diamonds she would say
The diamonds in the snow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Your life was never easy growing up the way you did
Your dad drank half his life away while your mother raised five kids
You fell in love at fifteen and had seven of your own
Despite your pain and sickness you created us a home
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You died twenty years ago and how I miss you still
When I trim my Christmas tree I see you at my windowsill
The lights that shine like diamonds; remind me what I know
To make it through the coldest pain look for diamonds in the snow
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Those are diamonds in the snow;When you find them it doesn’t seem as cold
The snow will surely melt away; Keep the diamonds she would say
The diamonds in the snow
The snow will surely melt away:Keep the diamonds she would say
The diamonds in the snow: The diamonds in the snow
